Well I’d say you’re wrong about that, every job has it’s its pet peeves and I’ve heard plenty of other professionals complain about ‘stupid customers’ etc. Hell, I do my fair share of complaining about idiot clients, but it’s nothing compared to the way I’ve spoken about hospitality clients and models/photographers in past jobs. Complaining about idiots is an integral part of the customer service industry.
The reason it’s more prominent in bar jobs and sex work is that your threshold is worn down by the sheer volume of idiocy and harassment you encounter, it can be really overwhelming. When you’re trying to go abut your day and get things done and you are distracted every five minutes by a work call that just consists of FUCKING INANE QUESTIONS and heavy breathing when you know from the second they speak that it’s just a waste of your time, it wears down your patience! In a bad week I will spend up to 20 hours on the phone and answering texts and emails from time wasters who have no intention of ever making a booking and who harass you incessantly, who send you abusive messages and cock shots, who call 50+ times in a day (I’m not exaggerating), who are clearly masturbating on the phone, who are nasty, who are lewd, who threaten you and who ask you the same questions over an over again.
Now ideally, you maintain your cool and patiently answer questions like ‘how old are you, what kind of service do you offer, what do you look like, where are you based, do you do anal?’ In reality you’ve spent a lot of time (and a fuck ton on money) on websites and ads and photos and you just CANNOT UNDERSTAND why someone who MUST have found your number RIGHT NEXT to your basic information and photos could possibly need to know what you look like.
80% of my phone calls start with ‘tell me a bit about yourself babe’. Or (my favorite), once I’ve spent 5 minutes answering questions about looks and services etc. ‘what’s your name again?’
I understand that most people call without reading my details, but because most of us are trying to do sex work while going about our daily lives, it’s incredibly frustrating to have to go over looks, services, location and rates with every single person who calls, when that information is available right next to the phone number or email they just used. More frustrating is when you’ve spent 10 minutes talking to someone, or exchanged several emails and then they ask ‘do you do CIM/anal/rape fantasies’. NO, NO I DON’T, I very clearly state that in all my ads, and if that was the most important feature of your booking inquiry, why are you wasting my goddamn time!
All of this is just the normal frustrations many people have in service jobs, but it comes on top of the harassment and the threats and vicious behavior, and when the requests are for illegal services or hardcore fetishes it just hits peak level.
I try not to complain about it too much on twitter, but twitter is not my main form of social interaction with other workers, and those for whom it is are just venting to their peers the same way anyone does at work, it’s just more public.
all of this.
